Why AI Gives Contradictory IELTS Writing Feedback
Prompt drift · Rubric lock · May 2026
In Band9AI first-party platform telemetry (see methodology), writing candidates flagged at Band 5–6 most often leak marks through task response under-development in Writing Task 2. This is an observational practice metric, not a controlled trial or guaranteed official IELTS lift. Verification methodology

AI Writing feedback contradicts itself when the prompt, the model, or the missing criterion changes: one chat marks GRA, the next praises “flow,” and neither quotes Task Response. This is not a Grok-only bug. Lock the four criteria, paste the question every time, and treat overall bands as non-comparable across tools. Official scores remain the TRF.
Part of the IELTS Writing Guide: every writing trap, band descriptor and practice drill in one place.

Why two “Band 7s” disagree
Language models sample. They also answer the question you asked. “Is this good?” is not “score TR/CC/LR/GRA with quotes.” Different questions, different theatres.
Contradiction sources
| Pattern | What goes wrong | Correct move |
|---|---|---|
| Different criterion weights | One chat is a grammar teacher | Ask for four scores every time |
| Different essay versions | You edited between pastes | Version your drafts |
| Invented bands | Numbers with no descriptor map | Discard the number; keep a quoted leak |
Make feedback comparable
1. Same prompt + same draft + same four criteria
Otherwise you are comparing apples to speeches.
2. Demand quotes from your text
If they cannot quote, they did not read.
3. Pick one practice scorer for trends
Hopping tools for a kinder band is the trap.
4. Unaided timed draft remains the ground truth
Chats are notes.
Key takeaways: Why AI Gives Contradictory IELTS Writing Feedback
- Contradiction often means different questions, not a secret IELTS truth.
- Lock TR/CC/LR/GRA.
- Do not average three chatbots’ overall bands.
- Not a Grok-specific exposé.
