Why IELTS Writing Scores Vary Between Task 1 and Task 2
Task 1 vs Task 2 · Weighting · May 2026
In Band9AI first-party platform telemetry (see methodology), writing candidates flagged at Band 5–6 most often leak marks through task response under-development in Writing Task 2. This is an observational practice metric, not a controlled trial or guaranteed official IELTS lift. Verification methodology

Writing scores vary between tasks because Task 1 (chart/letter) and Task 2 (essay) test different Task Achievement/Response jobs, and Task 2 carries more weight in the Writing band. You can describe data at 7 and fail to take a Task 2 stance at 6. This is not a Speaking band article. Train the weak task; do not average them in your head as “my English.”

Two tasks, one reported Writing score
Public IELTS information weights Task 2 more than Task 1. TA on a graphic is not TR on an opinion. CC/LR/GRA still apply to both, but leaks look different (overview vs position).
Why the split happens
| Task | Main unique job | Typical leak |
|---|---|---|
| Academic Task 1 | Overview + comparison of given data | Number dump / no overview |
| GT Task 1 | Letter bullets + tone | Missed bullet |
| Task 2 | Position + developed reasons | Fake balance / memorized intro |
Score the weak task on purpose
1. Track Task 1 and Task 2 sub-scores separately
Do not only store an overall Writing number.
2. Give the weaker task a weekly timed slot
Weighting means Task 2 often deserves more minutes — unless Task 1 is the disaster.
3. Do not import Task 2 opinions into Task 1
Different TA.
4. Confirm official weighting on IELTS sources
This page describes the pedagogical split, not a private formula.
