Academic vs General Reading: Same Skill, Different Text Pressure
IELTS Academic and General Training Reading test the same skill: finding the right information in a text, quickly and accurately. What changes is the kind of text you read and how hard it is to find the answer. General Training is not the easy option. The texts are more familiar, but you need more correct answers to reach the same band.
Same Skill, Different Pressure
Both tests give you 60 minutes and 40 questions, and the question types are the same: True/False/Not Given, matching headings, sentence completion and so on. In both, you need to find the part of the text that answers the question, then check it carefully. The difference is in the texts themselves, which changes where the pressure comes from.
Text Length Differences
Academic Reading has three long passages, each roughly 700 to 900 words, taken from books, journals and magazines. General Training is organised differently. Section 1 has two or three short everyday texts, such as notices or adverts. Section 2 has two work-related texts, such as a job description or staff guidelines. Section 3 is one longer text on a general topic, closer in style to an Academic passage.
Academic Text Length Impact
Long passages mean more to hold in your head. You need to find the paragraph that matches each question without rereading the whole passage. A good habit is to give each passage about 20 minutes and move on, even if a question is still open.
General Text Length Impact
In General Training you switch between several short texts, especially in Sections 1 and 2. Time goes on working out which text a question is about. Read the title and layout of each text first, so you know where to look before you start the questions.
Vocabulary Density
Academic passages use more formal, subject-specific words, and the main ideas are often hidden inside long sentences. General Training texts use everyday and workplace language: times, prices, rules and instructions. The words are easier, but the questions often depend on small details, such as a date, a condition or an exception.
Academic Vocabulary Pressure
You do not need to know every technical word. You need to understand what the sentence is saying and spot paraphrases. The question will rarely use the same words as the passage, so look for the same meaning, not the same word.
General Vocabulary Pressure
Familiar words make it easy to read too fast. Many General Training mistakes come from missing a small word like "only", "except" or "before". Slow down on rules and conditions, because that is where the traps are.
Information Placement
In Academic Reading, answers are spread through long paragraphs and are often tucked inside complex sentences. In General Training, answers are usually stated more directly, but they are spread across several texts, so you first have to find the right one.
Academic Information Placement
Answers can appear anywhere in a paragraph, not only in the first sentence. For most question types, answers follow the order of the passage, so use your last answer to find the next one.
General Information Placement
Answers are often in headings, lists or short sections of a notice. Scan for names, numbers and headings first, then read that part closely.
Why General Isn't "Easier"
The texts may feel easier, but the scoring makes up for it. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band. As a rough guide, about 30 correct answers gives Band 6 in General Training, while in Academic about 30 correct answers is closer to Band 7. The exact cut-offs change slightly between tests.
General Challenges
You have little room for careless mistakes. Missing a detail in a notice or confusing two similar adverts costs as much as a hard Academic question.
Academic Challenges
Long, dense passages are tiring, and many candidates run out of time on Passage 3. Time management matters as much as vocabulary.
Mode-Specific Strategies
For Academic Reading: spend about 20 minutes per passage, skim each paragraph's main idea first, and practise spotting paraphrases. For General Training: look at the layout of each text before reading, scan for names and numbers, and read rules and conditions word by word. In both, do not leave any answers blank, because wrong answers do not lose marks.
Practice and Feedback: Understanding Mode Differences
Practise the version you will actually take. Universities usually ask for Academic, while many immigration and work routes accept General Training. Check what your organisation requires before you start preparing.
Timed practice with feedback shows which question types and which texts cost you the most marks, so you know what to work on next.
Conclusion: Same Skill, Different Pressure
Academic and General Training Reading test the same skill with different texts. Academic is harder to read; General Training is harder to score well on. Practise the version you need, under real timing, and focus on the mistakes that repeat.
