IELTS Reading Question Types: One Game, Different Rules
IELTS Reading has several question types, and each one needs a slightly different approach. Using one method for everything wastes time and costs marks. Knowing how each type works, and which ones take longest, helps you plan your 60 minutes.
Why One Strategy Doesn't Fit Every Type
Some question types ask you to find a small detail. Others ask about the main idea of a paragraph. Some follow the order of the passage and some do not. The way you read, and how much time you spend, should change with the question type.
Multiple Choice Questions
Multiple choice questions ask you to pick the correct option, usually from four, or sometimes to choose two or three answers from a longer list. Find the part of the passage the question refers to, then compare each option with it carefully. Wrong options often use words from the passage but change the meaning.
How Multiple Choice Works
Answers usually follow the order of the passage. Distractors are often true statements that do not answer the question, or options that are only partly correct.
True/False/Not Given Questions
True/False/Not Given questions ask whether a statement agrees with the passage. Find the matching part of the text and decide whether it supports the statement, contradicts it, or does not say.
How True/False/Not Given Works
True means the passage says the same thing. False means the passage says the opposite. Not Given means the passage does not give that information. Answers follow the order of the passage.
Matching Headings Questions
Matching headings asks you to choose the heading that best sums up each paragraph. Read the whole paragraph, not just the first sentence, and ask what it is mainly about. There are more headings than paragraphs, and some headings are designed to match only one detail.
How Matching Headings Works
Each heading should describe the main idea of the whole paragraph. Answers do not follow a set order, so this type can take a long time if you have not practised it.
Matching Information Questions
Matching information asks which paragraph contains a particular detail. This is often one of the slowest types, because the answers are not in order and the detail may be in any paragraph. Many candidates leave it until they have read the passage for the other questions.
Summary Completion Questions
Summary completion gives you a short summary of part of the passage with gaps. Find the section the summary covers, then choose words that fit both the grammar and the meaning. Copy words exactly and stay within the word limit.
How Summary Completion Works
The summary rewords the passage, so look for the same meaning rather than the same words. Answers usually follow the order of that section.
Sentence Completion Questions
Sentence completion asks you to finish sentences with words from the passage. Predict what kind of word each gap needs, find the matching part of the text and check the word limit. Answers follow the order of the passage.
Which Question Types Are Fastest and Slowest
Types that follow the passage order, such as sentence completion, True/False/Not Given and most multiple choice, are usually quicker, because each answer points you towards the next. Types that do not follow the order, especially matching information and matching headings, usually take longer.
Time Allocation Strategy
Spend about 20 minutes per passage. Within a passage, it can help to do the in-order questions first, because they make you read the text, and then do the matching questions using what you have learned.
Strategies by Question Type
Matching headings: read each full paragraph for its main idea. Matching information: scan for the specific detail, and leave these until last if you are short of time. True/False/Not Given: compare the statement with the exact sentence in the text. Multiple choice: check every option against the passage and rule out the ones that are only partly right.
Why Understanding Question Types Matters
When you know how each type works, you use the right reading method, waste less time and make fewer avoidable mistakes.
Practice and Feedback: Mastering Question Types
After each practice test, count your mistakes by question type. Most candidates find that one or two types cause most of their lost marks.
AI feedback can show your accuracy for each question type, so you can focus your practice where it makes the most difference.
Conclusion
Each Reading question type works a little differently. Learn which types follow the passage order, plan your time around the slow ones and use the right method for each. That is often the quickest way to raise your Reading band.
