Task 2 · Essay form · May 2026
In Band9AI first-party platform telemetry (see methodology), writing candidates flagged at Band 5–6 most often leak marks through task response under-development in Writing Task 2. The bullet-point essay trap is answering Task 2 as a list of fragments, numbered claims, or slide headings instead of paragraphs with topic sentences and links. Examiners mark connected text. Bullets can look “clear” to you and still fail Coherence and Cohesion because there is no development, and Task Response because claims are not argued. Write prose paragraphs; lists belong in your 2-minute plan, not on the answer sheet.

Why slides fail the paper
Task 2 descriptors reward organisation of ideas in a discursive essay. A stack of dashes is a plan dump. Even accurate ideas stay under-developed if each is one line.
List habits that leak CC and TR
| Pattern | What goes wrong | Correct move |
|---|---|---|
| Plan on the sheet | You copy the outline instead of writing the essay | Keep the outline in the margin; prose in the box |
| One line per idea | No explanation or limit | Claim → why → example/limit |
| Numbered mini-essays | 1. 2. 3. with no overview stance | Two developed bodies beat five fragments |
Turn a bullet plan into paragraphs
1. Plan as bullets for 2 minutes only
Then stop listing.
2. Promote two bullets to topic sentences
Full clauses, not labels.
3. Attach why + limit to each
A bullet without ‘because’ is not a paragraph.
4. Read once for dashes
If you still see list markers, rewrite that block as 3–4 sentences.
Key takeaways: The Bullet-Point Essay Trap in IELTS Writing Task 2
- Bullets are a plan, not an essay.
- CC needs linked prose.
- TR needs developed claims, not labels.
- Two bodies beat five fragments.

What this looks like in a timed Band9AI mock
This is a practice pattern, not a published accuracy statistic. On a timed Band9AI mock, bullet point essay trap task 2 usually shows up as a local penalty (one item type or one criterion) while the rest of the paper still looks acceptable. Re-run the same item type under the clock; do not only re-read the explanation.
