Direct answer

A cause–solution mismatch is naming one problem mechanism (for example traffic from underpriced parking) then offering a solution that belongs to a different problem (plant more trees). Task Response needs the solution to bite the cause you argued. Write a two-column plan: cause A → solution A. If the columns do not connect, you wrote two unrelated mini-essays.

What the question is actually asking

Typical prompts: problems/causes and solutions, or why X happens and what can be done. Examiners look for logical pairing, not a menu of virtuous policies.

Orphan policy A solution that would be good in general but ignores your cause
Scale jump Individual cause, only government solution, with no link
Second cause surprise Body 2 introduces a new cause and never solves body 1

Mismatch patterns

PatternWhat goes wrongCorrect move
Topic cousinEducation cause, health-budget solutionKeep the same domain unless you explain the bridge
Vague ‘raise awareness’Fits any essay, solves nothing specificName the actor, the lever, and the cause it changes
Solutions-only panicYou forget to explain causesEqual job: the prompt asked for both

The two-column check

1. Write cause in 8 words

“Parking is too cheap → congestion.”

2. Write solution as a verb on that cause

“Price parking / improve buses that replace those trips.”

3. Kill orphan lines

If a policy does not touch the cause sentence, it is a different essay.

4. Mirror in the conclusion

Restate the pair, not a new third cause.

Key takeaways: Cause–Solution Mismatch Traps in IELTS Writing Task 2

  • Solutions must attack the cause you named.
  • Generic awareness campaigns are a common orphan.
  • Two columns before prose.
  • Do not introduce a new cause in the conclusion.
