Example Overload in IELTS Writing: When Stories Eat the Argument
Task 2 · Examples · May 2026
In Band9AI first-party platform telemetry (see methodology), writing candidates flagged at Band 5–6 most often leak marks through task response under-development in Writing Task 2. This is an observational practice metric, not a controlled trial or guaranteed official IELTS lift. Verification methodology

Example overload is stacking stories, fake studies, and national anecdotes until the paragraph never returns to the claim the prompt asked you to argue. One tight example beats three. Examiners mark Task Response on the position and its reasons; examples are support, not a memoir or a literature review.

What an example is for
A body paragraph needs a topic sentence, a reason, then optionally an illustration. When the illustration becomes the paragraph, CC wanders and TR looks descriptive.
Overload patterns
| Pattern | What goes wrong | Correct move |
|---|---|---|
| Triple example | Three countries, no reason | One example + a limit sentence |
| Fake research | “A 2019 study shows” with no real source | Examiners do not award invented citations |
| Task 1 numbers in Task 2 | Random statistics with no argument | If you lack a figure, argue without one |
The one-example rule
1. Write the claim without any example
If the claim cannot stand, the example will not save TR.
2. Add at most one illustration
A type of person, a typical policy, a limited case.
3. Close with a so-what
Link back to the stance.
4. Delete fake studies
They risk LR oddity and never prove TR.
Key takeaways: Example Overload in IELTS Writing
- Examples support claims; they are not the essay.
- Invented research is not a TR strategy.
- One illustration plus a limit beats three stories.
- Return to the prompt at the end of the paragraph.
