Direct answer

The trend-without-data trap is describing movement (“rose sharply,” “fluctuated”) without anchoring years, units, or values, so the overview is atmosphere. Task 1 is a data description. Trend verbs need at least one number or a clear start–end pair. This is the cousin of the comparison trap, not a Listening capitalisation item.

Trends are claims about data

Increase/decrease words are empty if the reader cannot recover the magnitude from your sentence. You do not need every point — you need enough to make the trend checkable.

Adverb fog significantly / dramatically with no digits
Missing years “later” with no date
Copied adjectives All trends are “sharp”

Empty trend vs anchored trend

PatternWhat goes wrongCorrect move
Empty“Unemployment fell”“Unemployment fell from 8% in 2010 to 5% in 2020”
Fake precisionInventing a number not on the chartOnly use graphic values
Trend only in overviewBodies then dump digits with no verbsBodies should still relate figures

Verb + anchor

1. For each trend verb, attach a pair

From X to Y, or by Z, or between years.

2. Ban “significantly” unless the scale is obvious

The number is the significance.

3. Pick 2–3 movements

Not every wiggle.

4. Keep units next to the first figure

% / tonnes / years.

Key takeaways: Trend-Without-Data Traps in IELTS Academic Task 1

  • Trend language without data is TA atmosphere.
  • Anchor with numbers or dates.
  • Do not invent figures.
  • Cousin of comparison; still Task 1 only.

Trend-Without-Data Traps in IELTS Academic Task 1: common questions

A short qualitative overview can work if bodies immediately quantify. All-qualitative scripts under-answer.
Stay faithful to the graphic. Obvious roundings of a labelled 19.8 to “about 20” are common; do not invent 50 when the bar is 20.
Process Task 1 uses sequence, not trends. Do not force increase-verbs onto a cycle diagram.

What this looks like in a timed Band9AI mock

This is a practice pattern, not a published accuracy statistic. On a timed Band9AI mock, trend description without data trap task 1 usually shows up as a local penalty (one item type or one criterion) while the rest of the paper still looks acceptable. Re-run the same item type under the clock; do not only re-read the explanation.
